Rocking Cape Town: Day five...

Day five commenced uneventfully. The morning consisted of general grocery shopping for my Dads get together with old friends. My sister and I were then sent out on a mission to buy 2 candles for the evening, needless to say, the mission took longer than we thought, not because we couldn’t find a place that sold them, but because we had such a great time walking Bree street, peeking into the pop up shops and messing about with the camera.
 
 
Following this, the preparation of the food for the night and lastly, slipping into this gorgeous red polka dot dress! It made me feel like I was in a retro vintage movie. On a last minute note, after entertaining all the ou toppies, I went out for a drink with some friends at Alexander Bar (click for link) in Strand Street. A vibey bar with “old world charm” as quoted on their website. We then moved on to The Bombay Bicycle Club (click for link) in Kloof Street. I can’t quite say I’ve ever been to such a place. The Christmas décor is over the top but the good kind of over the top. Its super eclectic with a mish mash of different characters who both work and eat there. They apparently serve a chilli chocolate steak on Thursday nights, I’m still deciding whether this is something I’d be into….

With the fantastic sunny weather at hand, it was off to the beach! Only the best will do, so in this case Clifton 4th beach! Camps Bay way was always way too commercial for us. We love the tucked away nooks and crannies that 4th beach offers! I'm lucky in that 1 day at the beach leaves me looking like a coloured, as you can clearly see from the photo. Yes that is me. looking like a dark stained piece of brown leather. But its working to my advantage, the Cape coloureds treat me like one of their own.

Most of the morning was spent relaxing on the beach, as one does, occasionally dipping my toes into the frigid water and fishing out ridiculous amounts of money for overpriced water. My sister and I also managed to slip in a walk to camps bay in search of frozen yoghurt. Much to our dismay there weren’t really any. We eventually found an ice cream parlour that in my opinion had pretty crappy ice cream. And at 20 ZAR a scoop I was close to throwing it in their faces. I didn’t. Pity though. It would have made an entertaining skit for onlookers.

After a long hot day at the beach I flung myself through the front doors of our apartment building only to see my close friend’s door open. I peeked through and found her sweeping an empty flat. She was moving out. We enjoyed a few laughs together followed by her ushering me to finish a glass of wine. She couldn’t dare speak of wasting any. I felt quite tipsy after. Which is probably why i can’t quite remember what we did that night…

Rocking Cape Town: day three...

 
Day three, Today, started by waking up to a late morning, just the way its meant to be. The morning saw me getting through a few errands followed by coffee at Mozart Cafe and a stroll down Long Street with an old friend. Although a sweltering 28 degree day, the wind seemed to help cool things down substantially. Note to self that I may have to buy more short shorts and tops, any excuse to buy something down here in the overly priced stores.
 
The company gardens is bustling with people coming to the celebrate summer markets where jazz, opera and other music is being played throughout the day. I’m staying right opposite the gardens so am typing this post with the sweet melodic sounds of jazz playing in the background. Earlier this morning it was opera! Now that’s something I could wake up to on a regular basis...
 


Rocking Cape Town 2012...

 As a few people who know me might know that Cape Town is where my heart really belongs. With that said, I thought it only fair to document my time here (although I’ve only technically been here for a day!)
 
The journey begins with a 4AM morning to pack the car and set off on the 2 day journey to paradise! Now I won’t go into too much detail with the drive there, because the Karoo can be quite baren. We did however stop over at a small town for a cup of coffee and the usual toilet break! A hospitable and humble gentleman helped us and shared a few stories too.


We didn’t do the trip in a full day, but split it up over two days, staying over in the small Karoo town of Prince Albert and boy what a gem this place proved to be! After much commotion trying to find a restaurant to eat supper at (it had been a long and cranky day folks) we found The Olive Branch. It’s a small little hideout owned by Bokkie Botha, who is also featured in the latest cookbook Karoo Kitchen (click here for link). Such a humble man whom also shared stories of the restaurant, his life and a few well known’s who have visited the restaurant. We also managed to walk the streets of the town and explore before heading off to Cape Town.
 
I’ve always enjoyed the drive down to the Cape and would trade flying for driving down any day. Watch this space for as many posts as possible, although I may be out doing awesome things and meeting awesome people before I get the chance to.

What the holidays are made for #4...

 
 
I stumbled across this quote not too long ago and thought, wow...that really is true. To put a little bit of perspective on why this would be so applicable to my situation (without pouring out every last detail of my life on the internet), is mainly due to the fact that I have lost the one boy I have ever truly loved. I know that is as cliché as any rom-com movie will get, but to be blatantly honest, I couldn’t really give a damn. With next year looking very uncertain in terms of a job and where in S.A I will actually end up working, it’s been decided to cut off all contact with this anonymous young lad.
 
 
Oh how I wish I could be young and carefree and not have to make such responsible and grown up decisions that will impact my entire life…with this said I swear my next post will embrace the Christmas cheer, spirit and festivities (also on a more positive note, I’m off to Cape Town soon. That ought to cure the post lover blues!).

What holidays are made for #3...

In my opinion, the word "indulgence" is very closely related to the word croissant, and more so eating one from Park Cafe in Parkwood. Luckily for me, they only had 1 chocolate croissant left, otherwise i'd have easily scoffed down 3. Not only are their croissants to literally drool over, but their homemade raspberry jam had me licking the out the bowl. Its on sale at the cafe, but beware its deliciousness is deadly!

What holidays are made for series...



 
So, iv officially finished my studies, with a BTech Industrial Design degree behind my name. Along with this prestigious honour, comes a month long holiday, and a well deserved one at that (its been a long year let me tell you). With the crazy amounts of work that i had been doing for my final project, i became a bit of a recluse and didn't do anything fun if one could call it that.
 
So with all this free time on my hands iv been doing all the things iv missed out on the past couple of months due to varsity. Hence i came up with the series of "That's what holidays are for", to record and and ultimately share what the holidays are for. This way I'm also bound to doing a post as regularly as i can, which hasn't been happening a heck of a lot this year (great timing to have started a blog in my BTech year huh).
